Incomplete wetting of methane on graphite at low temperatures
نویسنده
چکیده
The wetting behaviour of methane on graphite has been studied by means of low energy electron diffraction and reflection high energy electron diffraction in the temperature range 14-40 K. Incomplete wetting, or crystallite formation, is detected over the entire temperature range for films with thicknesses of 15 or more layers. Isosteric heats of adsorption are reported for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th adsorbed layers, and agree with earlier measurements recorded at 77 K. J. Physique 47 (1986) 1757-1762 OCTOBRE 1986,

First-order wetting transition in CF4 solid films adsorbed on the (0001) graphite surface
2014 The configuration of CF4 films condensed on a graphite single crystal (0001) surface has been observed by reflection high energy electrons diffraction (RHEED) and by low energy electron diffraction (LEED). The films exhibit a first order incomplete to complete wetting transition at 37 K, a temperature far below the CF4 bulk triple point (89. 5 K). The structure of the film has been studied...
متن کاملCoadsorption phase diagram for CH4/CCl4 on graphite
We present an extensive thermodynamic study of methane coadsorbed on graphite precoated with a saturated monolayer of carbon tetrachloride. A combination of heat capacity and volumetric equation of state data permit construction of the multilayer coadsorption phase diagram between 70 and 115 K. Displacement of the preadsorbed CCl4 by CH4 occurs by a continuous process across the temperature ran...
متن کاملTheory and Observation of Displacement Phenomena in Coadsorbed Films
Displacement refers to a surprising phenomenon observed in a number of adsorption systems. At low temperatures, some relatively inert gases, such as krypton (Kr) or methane (CH4), are found to displace molecules from preadsorbed monolayer films of a more condensable species, such as carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), from a graphite substrate. We present a simple thermodynamic model to explain displa...
متن کاملGrand canonical monte carlo simulation study of methane adsorption at an open graphite surface and in slit-like carbon pores at 273 K.
Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation was used for the systematic investigation of the supercritical methane adsorption at 273 K on an open graphite surface and in slit-like micropores of different sizes. For both considered adsorption systems the calculated excess adsorption isotherms exhibit a maximum. The effect of the pore size on the maximum surface excess and isosteric enthalpy of...

We report on laboratory simulation experiments mimicking the chemical processing of model atmospheres of exoplanets containing C3 and C4 hydrocarbons at moderate temperatures of 400 K upon interaction of catalytic surfaces of micrometeoroids. By utilizing an ultrasonic levitator device and heating singly levitated particles under simulated microgravity conditions, Raman spectroscopy is utilized...
